Gemstone Used
Peridot has been used in jewelry since Egypt, 2000-1000 BC. It is a constituent of alkaline magmatic rock and was originally gathered from an island in the Red Sea. While this island remains it's most important natural deposit, Peridot has also been found in some meteorites! Once confused with the Topaz, various theories and interpretations exist for its origin. Famous Topaz's in history may actually be Peridot, such as those found on the breastplate of Aaron, Moses' brother in Exodus. Early Greek and Romans also confused this gem with Topaz, and considered it one of the most precious of all. Regardless of the name, Peridot remains a much loved gemstone in fine jewelry. -
